Social Media Saves Lives!

Facebook Philanthropy… using social networking to promote social change.

In this new online social world, it’s the things you care about, that really define who you are. The people in your lives, the work you do and the things you are passionate about. They say as much about you as a person, as the clothes you wear or the car you drive.

Social Networks and Social Networking have fundamentally changed the way we communicate as a society. Connecting with someone on a one-to-one is much less common today then connecting on a one-to-many. Like it or not, this is likely here to stay.

This one-to-many approach to communication of course has it’s pro’s and cons. I’m here to chat only about the pro’s. Social Networks of today have changed the way people support charities, promote causes and in their own way, try to affect change in the world. It’s more possible now for groups and causes to get the word out to exponentially more people then at any point in history.

Leveraging the power of social networks like Facebook, YouTube and Twitter have redefined how charitable causes approach fundraising and Public Relations for their cause.

There are many causes that have captivated the hearts and minds of mainstream media today. Breast Cancer Awareness is certainly one of them. Who can miss seeing the pink ribbons and the huge men of the gridiron wearing pink football gloves and cleats. Very powerful awareness… that is simply unachievable for many causes today.

The opposite to this would be men’s health concerns, particularly men’s cancers. Prostate cancer will affect 1 in 6 men over the course of their lifetime. This fact goes quite unknown, why, because we’re men and we don’t want to talk about it.

A quiet yet powerful movement was needed to tackle this subject. Something that was as visible as the “pink” is to women’s cancers. Ahaaa! Of course! What is more manly then the moustache? Magnum PI had one, Hulk Hogan has one, and ah yes… Albert Einstein had one. The moustache… something that is visible and truly defines us as men.

Thus “Movember” was born.
